Bearded Retriever

Breed Standard
Defining Characteristics
The Bearded Retriever is medium to large furnished dog. It is adaptable- able to cope with various situations and environments easily. It is biddable- always ready to accept and follow instructions; friendly - never wary of strangers; with a lower to non shedding coat compared to its retriever ancestors.

Purpose
Bearded Retrievers are the ideal companion dog, family pet, therapy or facility dog owing to their tolerance of new environments, and the joy with which they greet strangers. Their low to non shedding coat does not drop excessive hair in a home environment and its texture and appearance are therapeutic for many humans.

Temperament
Temperament is the most important defining characteristic of the breed. A Bearded Retrievers is "bomb proof" and friendly to a fault. It is not loyal to its family but rather accepting of strangers. It is never aggressive with any person or dog, although being reserved with strange dogs is acceptable. It is tolerant of children, handling, new environments, loud sounds, confinement, car rides, and crowds. Its exercise needs are not excessive and it has an excellent "off switch" allowing it to relax during time alone, confinement and when exercise is limited.
Appearance
Medium to large, well-balanced, sturdy, alert. The overall emphasis is on moderation with no part exaggerated or out of proportion. Males or females measure 18 to 25 inches and weigh between 35 and 70 pounds. In proportion slightly longer than tall, lean and fit, neither bulky and heavy-bodied nor frail and spindly. Back firm with a slight rise over loins; ribs well sprung, chest moderately deep. Abdomen moderately tucked up.
Head
Moderate length, with a moderate and well defined stop. A moderately flat, wide skull. Muzzle should not be overly long nor too short, teeth should be strong and regular with a scissors bite, jaw is neither undershot nor overshot. Lips tight and well-fitted. Ears are medium size, hanging close to the head, without excessive hair in the ear canal as to require pulling. Eyes are variable from round to almond, imparting kindness and alertness. Neither inset nor protruding.
Tail
Moderately long. Undocked. Excessive curliness or screw tail is excluded.
Coat
Genetically short or long and double furnished. Any texture is acceptable. Excessive curl is discouraged. Wire coated (short furnished) coats acceptable. Functional coats without excessive matting preferred. Should be able to be brushed weekly and groomed monthly without pelting. Should not leave excessive hair on furniture or clothing in a home environment.
Color
All colors and markings are acceptable. Double merle and excessive white are to be strictly avoided. Dilute colors are not encouraged.
